Black-and-white 1950s snapshot of a young woman in a floral summer dress laughing on wooden porch steps
Summer of 1955. I was seventeen. My brother Joe had just bought a Brownie camera with his paper-route money, and he made me laugh on purpose.

Chapter One

The porch on Wren Street

We lived in a narrow white house in Dayton, Ohio, with a porch that sagged in the middle. That porch was the whole world to me. My mother shelled peas there. My father read the paper there every evening, and nobody spoke until he had finished the sports page. On hot nights all four of us kids slept out there in a row, like sardines.

Worn 1960s black-and-white studio portrait of a young man in a US Army uniform and garrison cap
Walt at Fort Dix, New Jersey, 1961. He hated this picture. I carried it in my purse for two years.

Chapter Two

Walt

I met Walt at the roller rink on Third Street. He couldn’t skate to save his life. He held on to the rail all night and kept telling me he was only resting. I thought he was the funniest boy I had ever met. When he was drafted in 1961, he wrote to me every single week. I still have every letter.

Black-and-white 1960s wedding photo of a bride and groom at the foot of brick church steps as guests toss rice
The steps of St. Mary’s. That’s my sister Carol on the left, aiming the rice right at Walt.

Chapter Three

June 2, 1962

It rained all morning, and my mother said that meant good luck. By the time we came out of St. Mary’s, the sun was out and everyone was throwing rice. Walt got a grain stuck in his ear and spent the whole party tilting his head. We had ham sandwiches and Aunt Ruth’s lemon cake in the church hall. It wasn’t fancy. It was perfect.

Faded 1970s color snapshot of a young family crouching at a lake shore with two toddlers and a red bucket
Indian Lake, July 1974. Walt, me and the twins, Annie and Tom. That red bucket went everywhere with them.

Chapter Four

Summers at the lake

Every July we packed the station wagon and drove up to Indian Lake. Walt fished off the dock before anyone else was awake. The twins lived in their sun hats and dug for treasure with a red bucket. I sat with my feet in the water and thought, this is it. This is the good part. I knew it even then.

Your book begins with a free, friendly call. Someone in your family has stories like these.

Start with a free call

Margaret’s Story was told over four conversations from her armchair in Dayton, Ohio. Written in her own words, with her family’s photographs, and designed by Vyvlio.

A sample written to show the style. Margaret and her family are illustrative. Your book is written from your own family’s conversations and photos.

How it works

Four simple steps. No writing required.

Your storyteller only has to talk. We do the questions, the writing and the design.

  1. Step 1: A free, friendly call

A 30-minute video call with one of our interviewers. You meet the person behind the questions and sketch out the chapters of a life. No card, no pressure.

  2. “I met Walt at the roller rink on Third Street. He couldn’t skate to save his life.”

    Margaret, in her second conversation

    Step 2: Four relaxed conversations

Your storyteller talks; we listen. Four recorded interviews with the same interviewer, from the comfort of home, by video call.

  3. Step 3: Add the family photos

Upload photos from a phone or computer, or let us help. They go right beside the stories they belong to.

  4. Step 4: Your book, beautifully made

Our writers shape every word in your storyteller’s own voice, our designers lay it out, and you read it as a page-turning book to keep and share.

Most books are ready 8 to 10 weeks after the first interview. Have a birthday or the holidays in mind? Tell us your date and we’ll plan around it.

For both of you

Easy to give. Easy to tell.

Questions

Questions families ask

What happens on the free call?

You meet your interviewer by video for about 30 minutes. They explain how everything works and ask how your storyteller might divide their life into chapters. There is no sales pitch and no card required. Afterwards you get a personal story plan on your family page.

What if my parent is shy or doesn’t like talking about themselves?

Lots of people feel that way at first. Our interviewers are trained to make it feel like a relaxed visit, not an interview. They start with easy, happy memories, follow your storyteller’s lead, and never push on anything they would rather not share.

Can other family members join the interviews?

Yes. Some families like a son, daughter or grandchild to sit in, especially for the first conversation. Others prefer the storyteller to talk one to one. Either works well. Everyone on the call is simply asked to agree to the recording.

Who can see our stories and photos?

Only your family and the small Vyvlio team working on your book. Your stories, recordings and photos are stored privately, are never sold, and are never used in advertising without your written permission.

How long does it take?

Most books are ready 8 to 10 weeks after the first interview. If you need it for a birthday, anniversary or the holidays, tell us your date in the first step and we will plan around it.

What if we are not happy with the book?

Tell us. We will rewrite and redesign until it feels right, and if it still doesn’t, we refund you in full.
